Fred Champion Groundworks Ltd are proud to be involved in the construction works on not just a new housing development at Sherford, but a new community being developed in the heart of Devon. With the aspiration of having its own unique identity and atmosphere, the community is set to become one of the most thriving and social market towns in the region.


Located on the Eastern outskirts of the lively city of Plymouth, Sherford will occupy over 1,200 acres of farmland between the A38 and A379. Set in one of the country’s most picturesque locations, Sherford will both respect and enhance the surrounding landscape - making it one of the most desirable places to live and work for 12,000 residents.


Set to transform the region, Sherford will be an unrivalled county town, combining traditional living with modern design, with features including:


  • 5,500 new homes and over 80,000 m² employment and retail space.
  • Three primary schools and a secondary school.
  • A variety of community facilities which include: a town hall, youth centre, health centre, library, theatre, sports centre and a community park.


Sherford will be a thriving and sustainable community, with its own unique way of life. A town open to everyone, Sherford will be one of the West Country’s most prosperous locations providing, affordable housing, local jobs and a full range of shops and businesses.


Fred Champion Groundworks Ltd works are on-going and will include the following main infrastructure works:


  • Installation of Main Street to Adoptable standards, including full reinstatement works.
  • Earthworks to site wide areas.
  • Reinforced Earth Bund between Main Street and the Quarry.
  • Stream Diversion & Culvert to Main Street.
  • Foul & Storm Drainage to Infrastructure contract.
  • Installation temporary hall road.
  • Foul Attenuation tank to accommodate 5000 properties.
  • Foul Pumping Station to accommodate 5000 properties & associated control buildings.


As well as the main infrastructure works above and once the parcels of land have been split between the associated house builders, Fred Champion Groundworks Ltd will be carrying out works for individual house builders, comprising of reduce level excavations and subsequent cart away of arising materials. Construction of the foundations, substructure blockwork and beam and block floors. Building of all the necessary retaining wall structures to allow the best use of the existing site contours. Installation of all required private plot drainage and accompanying soakaways, which all link into the new main adoptable drainage system, before connecting the existing sewer system or attenuation on site. All private parking areas and access roads linking again to a new adoptable main road system, adjoining the existing roads at both the top and bottom of the site.

The new community is a joint venture between the Sherford Consortium made up of: Bovis Homes, Linden Homes and Taylor Wimpey.


This isn’t the only joint venture formed regarding this ground breaking project, with both Fred Champion Ground works Ltd and Steve Hoskin Construction Ltd combining forces to form Groundfix Ltd. A new company, made up of staff from both teams, specifically formed for this very project and in particular with the sole purpose of carrying out Infrastructure and Groundworks at Sherford for the Main Street and Civils 2 package.


This decision has not only allowed two very local and long standing companies to be involved in such a historical and innovative project, but has also enabled the Sherford Consortium to draw upon the vast experience in the ground and also their resources, in respect of both skilled operatives and heavy plant.
